DESCRIPTION

Nakijin Castle Ruins (今帰仁城跡) is a historic castle site located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa Main Island. The castle was originally built around the 13th century and once served as an important political and military center during the Ryukyu Kingdom period.

Unlike many traditional Japanese castles, Nakijin Castle features long curved stone walls made from limestone, creating a unique architectural style that resembles parts of the Great Wall of China. The castle’s design reflects the distinct culture and history of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Although much of the original structure was destroyed over time and during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, the remaining stone walls and ruins still preserve the atmosphere of ancient Okinawa. Walking through the castle gates and pathways allows visitors to experience the historical charm of the Ryukyu era.

From the castle grounds, visitors can also enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding green forests and the blue ocean of northern Okinawa.

Nakijin Castle is especially famous during the cherry blossom season in January and February, when the castle grounds are covered with beautiful pink sakura flowers. During special night illumination events, lantern lights create a romantic atmosphere around the castle ruins.

Visitors interested in Okinawan history can also explore the nearby Nakijin Village History and Culture Center, where historical exhibits about the castle and Ryukyu Kingdom are displayed.

Because of its combination of history, culture, architecture, and natural scenery, Nakijin Castle Ruins is one of the most recommended historical attractions in Okinawa.
